Professor Mamais is teaching ten graduate and postgraduate courses on Water Resources Management, Water and Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Enginnering topics at NTUA, has supervised more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate theses, and has participated as invited lecturer in a large number of seminars and conferences. He has supervised four PhD thesis that were completed between 2010 – 2018, and he is currently supervising three PhD students. He is or has been a member of  eleven PhD committes. In addition to teaching and research at NTUA he is involved in extensive administrative work, serving in several Faculty Committees, mainly related to the curriculum of the School of Civil Engineering. He has been the Chairman of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering for three terms, (2014 – 2016). Since 2017 he is a member of the Senate of the School of Civil Engineering, NTUA. He is currently the Director of the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory of NTUA.

Professor Mamais has more than 25 years of experience in research on water rsources management, water, wastewater and sludge treatment and reuse and remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons and hexavalent chromium. Professor Mamais has been engaged in 75 research projects dealing mainly with water, wastewater and sludge treatment, removal and fate of priority substances and emerging pollutants in wastewater treatment plants, wastewater disposal and reuse and remediation. From the 71 research projects, he has co-ordinated 19 projects with a total budget of approximately 3.7 million euro (CHARM LIFE ENV/GR/000601, SPECHROM FP7-PEOPLE-2011-IIF, etc). He is the author of over 135 publications in international journals and conference proceedings with peer review. According to Scopus his published work has received more than 1750 citations (h index = 22). Professor Mamais has served as an evaluator of research proposals for the Creek General Secretary of Research, the Institution for the Advancement of Research of Cyprus, the European Commission and the  Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. He has been engaged as a reviewer in a series of high quality scientific journals (e.g. Water Science and Technology, Water Research, Water Environemnt Research, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Hazardous Materials,  etc).Currenlty he is participating as a Reviewer Editor of the Frontiers in Environmental Science Journal. He is also a member of the Experts Group of the European Federation of Biotechnology.

Since 1987 D. Mamais has been professionally involved in 50 projects related to related to the design of water and sewage treatment plants, solid waste and sludge management, water resources management and environmental issues in various cities, including the major cities Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Volos and Lamia, to the design of industrial wastewater treatment plants (Johnson & Johnson Hellas SA, Manos SA, etc). Since, 2010, D. Mamais has been appointed National representative (Focal Point) for the Working Group E on Priority Substances and river-basin-specific pollutants under the Water Framework Directive Common Implementation Strategy. During 2010 -12, he was a member of two Working Groups of the Special Secretary of Water of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climatic Change that were responsible for the review and amendment of the legislation regarding municipal wastewater discharge and reuse. He has acted as consultant to the Ministry of Environment and Public Works, the Ministry of Development, the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climatic Change, the Water and Sewage Coorporations of Athens (EYDAP) and various municipalities, on environmental issues.
