Alexandra Katsiri

Dr A. Katsiri is Professor of NTUA, School of Civil Engineering, Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, NTUA. She is currently Director of Sanitary Engineering Laboratory. Dr A. Katsiri is a graduate Civil Engineer from NTUA and has a PhD from Strathclyde University on the transient response and stability of the activated sludge process to shock loads. Her area of expertise is sewerage and water distribution networks, surface water quality, wastewater treatment and disposal, sludge treatment and reuse, solid waste management and assessment of environmental impacts. From 2005 to 2007 she was elected as Director of the Department of Water Resources and Environment. She has been engaged in more than 30 national and European research projects, mainly as scientific responsible, and has participated in a large number of engineering studies as a specialist. She is the author of more than 120 papers in international journals, conference proceedings and book chapters during the past 30 years. She has a 30 year long teaching experience in graduate and postgraduate courses in NTUA and the Greek Open University in the field of Environmental Technology. She has supervised more than 100 diploma theses and 10 PhD theses. She is an active member of the academic community. She has been a member of several scientific and professional committees and presented papers as invited speaker in conferences, workshops and technical seminars. For the last 5 year she is the coordinator of the International E-learning MSc programme «Water resources and Environmental Management».

Research experience (Selected research projects)

  • Assimilative capacity of the Kalamas river and the lake Pamvotis in the Ipiros area. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works. Main investigators Th. Xanthopoulos, A. Katsiri, N. Katsiris, D. Koutsogiannis, A. Andreadakis. Final report submitted (1983-85). The project comprised collection and analysis and samples from the river and the lake, estimation of pollution loads in the catchment area and the mathematical modeling of water quality for different scenarios of Waste water allocations using the EPA QUALII model.
  • Two-stage biological treatment systems. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Ministry of Research and Technology. Main investigators D. Christoulas, A. Andreadakis, A. Katsiri. Final report submitted (1984-1988). The project comprised pilot scale studies of two important biological treatment systems, i.e. “two-stage aerated lagoons” and “two-stage biological filters”, with the aim of achieving valid design criteria with universal application to Mediterranean countries.
  • Investigation of the possible treatment and disposal methods for geothermal waste brines from the experimental geothermal electricity plant on the island of Milos. Division of Water Resources NTUA and Department of Environmental Engineering, Athens School of Public health. Sponsor: PPC. Main investigators G. Christodoulou, A. Katsiri, N. Katsiris. Final report submitted (1987-1988). The project comprised laboratory jar tests for the physicochemical treatment of geothermal brines using lime, iron salts and oxidizing agents. On the basis of the experimental results a preliminary design for treatment facilities was prepared. The initial and subsequent dilution of brines when disposed to sea by means of an outfall was studied using theoretical mathematical analysis of the resulting plume.
  • Measurement of toxic metal metals in the sewage of Athens and its effect to anaerobic digestion. Department of Environmental Engineering, Athens School of Public health and Division of Water Resources, NTUA. Sponsor: Ministry of Research and Technology. Main investigators N. Katsiris, B. Evrenoglou, A. Katsiri. Final report submitted (1987-1990). This program comprised detailed analytical sampling and analysis of Wastewater from the Athens area with a scope of determining toxic metal concentrations, their seasonal and diurnal variations and settling rates in primary sedimentation. A parallel investigation was undertaken to study the effects of metals to anaerobic digestion of sludge using laboratory scale digesters.
  • Production of leachate from municipal solids control tipping areas. Division of Water Resources, NTUA. Sponsor: Ministry of Research and Technology. Main investigators A. Katsiri, D. Christoulas, A. Bosdogianni. Final report submitted (1990-95). This program aims at developing data and criteria for the quantities and qualities of leachates produced from municipal solids wastes control tipping areas given the different nature of solid wastes produced in the warmer counties. The production of leachates is studied in laboratory scale lysimeters filled with different types and combination of wastes. Leachate samples are also collected on a monthly basis from experimental wells that were driven in an existing tipping site that receives solid wastes from the Athens area.
  • Design, construction and operation of a pilot plant for the treatment of municipal Waste water. Division of Water Resources NTUA and EYDAP Sponsor: NATO Scientific Affairs Division-Science for Stability Programme. Main investigators D. Christoulas, A. Andreadakis, A. Katsiri,N. Katsiris. Final report submitted (1987-95). This program comprises the construction and operation of pilot scale units to study application of different waste water treatment processes such as primary sedimentation, physicochemical treatment, alternating oxidation ditches, nitrification and denitrification in activated sludge, treatment of septage in countries with warm climates.

  • Alternative methods of sewage disposal of sludge from The Larissa treatment plants - Application to agricultural land. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Larissa water and sewerage authority. Main investigators A. Katsiri, S. Papagrogoriou, A. Bosdogianni. Final report submitted. (1992-94) . This program comprised a field survey, an extensive sampling and analysis of dewatered sludge to determine its agricultural characteristics, a pilot investigation in pots and experimental fields to determine application rates and metal uptake and a detailed design for the application schedule of sludge to farmland including an economical cost benefit analysis.
  • Quality assessment and alternative methods for disposal sewage sludge from the Psittalia sewage treatment plant. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Ministry of Public Works, Athens. Main investigators D. Christoulas. A. Andreadkis, E. Aytias, A. Katsiri, D. Mamais. Final report submitted (1996-1997). This program involved an extensive sampling and analysis of dewatered sludge from the Psittalia treatment plant to determine its characteristics and heavy metal content, pilot scale experiments in a batch activated sludge reactor to predict the quality of biological sludge and technical-economical evaluations of possible sludge disposal methods including co-incineration in cement kilns, use as a fuel in power generation plants, co-composting with municipal wastes and agricultural use as biosolids.
  • Combined treatment of domestic wastewater and olive-oil mill effluent in the island of Kythira. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Local Authority of Kythira. Main investigators A. Katsiri, L. Vamvakeridou. Final report submitted (1998-1999). This project involved extensive laboratory simulations of olive-oil mill effluent treatment by anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion and reed-beds. Based on the results of the laboratory simulations a system of wastewater collection and treatment was designed for a small town of 2000 inhabitants and the effluent from three olive-mills.
  • Environmental Rehabilitation of Lake Koronia - Field Work and Testing Department of Environmental Engineering, Athens School of Public health and Division of Water Resources, NTUA. Sponsor: EEC, Cohesion Fund. Main investigators N. Katsiris, G. Pappa, A. Katsiri. Final report submitted (1998-1999). This research involved sampling and analysis of water and sediments from the lake Koronia in Northern Greece and assessment of its eutrophication status.
  • Management of Water Quality of the Plastiras Reservoir. Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor: Municipality of Karditsa.Main investigarors K. Xatzimbiros, A. Andreadakis, A. Katsiri, A. Stamou. Final report submitted (2001-2003). This project involved a hydrological study, estimation of point and diffuse pollution loads, mathematical simulations of water quality, landscape considerations, appropriate methods for the treatment of wastewater and the use of an optimization method to establish a minimum, ecological water level in the reservoir.
  • Evaluation of the treatment efficiency of a novel system BIOBLOCK for the treatment of wastewater. Laboratory of Sanitary Engineering, Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor ENVITEC S.A. Main Investigator A. Katsiri. Final report submitted (2000-2001). This project involved the detailed evaluation of the performance of a prototype pilot unit BIOBLOCK , installed within the premises of the Korinthos-Loutraki treatment plant, with a capacity of 2000 e.p. The system BIOBLOCK is a compact activated sludge system with capabilities of nitrogen and phosphorous removal. The evaluation involved daily sampling of influent, effluent, mixed liquor and excess sludge for a period of 12 months.
  • Remediation of contaminated land and ground water with physicochemical and biological methods. Laboratory of Sanitary Engineering, Division of Water Resources NTUA. Sponsor Ministry of Research and Technology and EYDAP. Main investigators A. Katsiri, D. Sakellariades. Final report submitted (1998-2002). This research program involved laboratory pilot scale investigations of the fate of volatile organic compounds in saturated soils, and the effects of the addition of humic acids as well as microbial action.
  • Site Specific Risk Assessment of Contaminated Sediments, Laboratory of Sanitary Engineering, Division of Water Resources NTUA. This project involved the analysis of contaminated sediments from the port of Piraeus and Elefsis bay, the study of mechanisms of heavy metal release in the environment under varying environmental conditions and the development of a model for the prediction of fate and transport of metals.
